Cancelling a GAP Insurance Policy

 

First things first, you can cancel a GAP Insurance policy at any time after taking out the cover, until either a claim is made or the policy naturally expires. 

 

If you bought your GAP Insurance from Total Loss GAP

 

Cancelling your policy with us is straightforward. Complete our contact form or call us on 0800 195 4926 or 0151 647 7556, and we’ll take care of the rest.

  • Within 30 days (the cooling-off period), if no claim has been made, you’ll receive a full refund providing no claim has been made.

  • After 30 days, if no claim has been made, the underwriters will issue a pro-rata refund. A £35 administration fee may be deducted (depending on the insurer's terms at the time of policy purchase).

Refunds are typically processed within a set number of working days (this will be disclosed at the time of your refund); however, it may take longer for the funds to appear in your account, depending on your bank's processing time.

If you bought your GAP Insurance elsewhere

 

We regularly receive calls from people trying to cancel or amend GAP Insurance policies that weren’t purchased from us. This usually happens after a dealership tells a customer to “contact GAP Insurance” and, after a quick Google search, our details appear.

 

Unfortunately, we can’t cancel or manage policies that weren’t bought from Total Loss GAP. Here’s why:

  • There’s no central register of GAP Insurance policies.

  • We don’t know which provider or underwriter your policy is with.

  • Each provider has different cancellation terms, refund rules, and cooling-off periods.

For example, while we offer a 30-day cooling-off period, some policies only provide a 14-day period.

 

You would need to contact the company that sold you the GAP Insurance and ask them to find who you need to ring (not just put 'GAP Insurance' into Google!!)

 


How to cancel a GAP Insurance policy not bought from us

 

To save time and avoid frustration, follow our simple 4-step plan:

  1. Find your policy documents – these will confirm your provider, underwriter, and cancellation rights.

  2. Check the cancellation section – it will outline how long your cooling-off period lasts and what refund (if any) you’re entitled to.

  3. Ask your dealership for a copy – if you can’t locate your documents, the dealership is obliged to supply one.

  4. Check your bank statement – if the dealership is slow to respond, your bank statement should show who took payment, which will point you to the right provider.

At Total Loss GAP, we want to help every driver who contacts us. But legally and regulatorily, we can only manage policies bought directly through us.

By following the steps above, you should be able to identify your provider and secure any refund to which you’re entitled. And if you do choose to take cover with us in the future, we’ll make sure cancelling is as easy as buying.

 

FAQs on Cancelling GAP Insurance

 

When can I cancel GAP Insurance? 

Anytime from the time you buy the policy to the time you either claim or the policy expires. 

 

When can I not cancel GAP Insurance? 

If you make a claim, then the policy naturally expires. This would be the key time you could not cancel your policy. 

 

If I cancel, can I get a refund on the GAP policy? 

Yes, usually this is the case. If you cancel in the 'cooling off period', then you can expect a full refund of the premium paid, typically. If you are outside the cooling-off period, a pro rata refund is usually provided for the proportion of the time remaining on the cover. This then may be subject to a cancellation fee, depending on the insurer's terms when you bought the policy. 

 

Who can cancel a GAP Insurance policy? 

We can only take instructions from the policyholder of the GAP Insurance policy to cancel the policy.
