How to Cancel a Gap Insurance Policy?

Cancelling your gap insurance policy should be as easy as buying it.

If you have bought your policy from us at Total Loss Gap, use our contact form or call us at 0800 1954926 or 0151 647 7556, and we can process your cancellation. Simple. Easy!

If you cancel your policy within the first thirty days and have yet to attempt to make a claim, we can issue a full refund.

After that time, on the proviso that you have not made a claim, the underwriters will issue a pro-rata refund. They will, however, retain the first £35.00 of any amount due.

If you bought your policy from another provider, cancelling your gap insurance may be more complex than you think.

We are called hundreds and hundreds of times per month by consumers who need assistance contacting, cancelling, making a claim, or even amending their policy.

Usually, this happens because they have contacted their dealership, who simply Google Gap Insurance. Our details appear, and hey presto, we are given as your point of contact.

This is unfair to you, the policyholder, and our team.

We understand that by the time you have contacted us, you may have already been passed from pillar to post trying to administer your policy.

However, gap insurance is not like car insurance.

  1. There is no national register of Gap Insurance policies.
  2. At present, no database allows us to see who your policy is with.
  3. We do not know which level of coverage you have.
  4. We do not know if you will be eligible for a refund.
  5. We do not know if you have made a claim.
  6. We do not have any of your vehicle or personal details.
  7. Unfortunately, at the moment, we are not the only providers of Gap Insurance in the UK.

We completely understand that this is frustrating for you, and while we will always try to help, please remember that we are only legally and regulatory-wise able to comment on our policies.

If you have bought your gap insurance policy elsewhere, the terms, conditions, and rights of cancellation and refund could and often wholly differ from our policies.

For example, when you cancel a gap insurance policy provided by us, you have a 30-day cooling-off period; in comparison, your policy may only offer 14 days, etc.

Before you get ready to cancel your policy, we recommend that you use the following steps to ensure that your policy is cancelled as quickly and efficiently as possible and, where available, you receive the maximum refund.

  1. Find your policy documents and have them ready to hand.
  2. Look for the section marked cancellation.
  3. If you can not find them, ask your dealership for a copy. They have a legal and, we think, a moral obligation to be able to provide you with a copy.
  4. If your dealership can not supply a copy quickly enough, look at your bank statements and see to whom the payment for your policy was made.

At Total Loss Gap, we pride ourselves in always aiming to offer the best levels of customer service we can and find it difficult not being able to help a customer.

Using our 4-step plan "How to cancel your gap insurance policy ", even if your policy is not with us, we hope will help ensure that the process is as simple as possible.
