Policy Type | Cooling Off Period

The Total Loss GAP website provides a range of insurance and maintenance products. These are from different providers, and they do have different cancellation and cooling-off period rules. We have also provided a range of products to customers in the past that may have carried different cancellation and cooling-off rules than the current ones we offer.

The cancellation and cooling-off rules were set for your policy when you buy it. It is essential to review the policy paperwork to determine your cancellation and cooling-off rights.

If you are in doubt, please call us and we will confirm this for you.

What is a cooling-off period?

This is the period, immediately after you buy the policy, that you can cancel and get a full refund (in the vast majority of cases).

We understand that circumstances change, and you may change your mind on whether the insurance is a good idea for you.

That's why we have extended the standard statutory 14-day cooling-off period to 30 days in recent years. All GAP Insurance policies have carried this 30 day period for a number of years. Current Tyre, Alloy and Cosmetic products may have either a 30 day or a 14 day cooling off period. Please check your paperwork to confirm.

What are your cancellation rights?

You can cancel your policy at any time. If you have made a claim, then no refund is normally due; you may still be able to transfer some cover to your new vehicle, but not GAP Insurance. When you have claimed on a GAP policy, then that is it spent. Products for Tyres, Alloy Wheels and Cosmetic repairs may have transfer options available.

If you cancel and no claim has been made, then a refund is normally due on most cover options. The exceptions may be Motor Excess Insurance and the Maintenance Plans

Again, please check your specific cover documents to confirm these arrangements. If you are unsure, don't hesitate to get in touch with us and we will be happy to confirm.

What happens if you want to cancel and you're outside of the cooling-off period?

Provided you have not made a claim, most insurance policies have a pro rata refund available for the time left on the policy, which can be returned to you.
