You don't find Total Loss GAP on GAP Insurance comparison websites - here's why

When you're shopping around for many types of insurance, comparison websites like MoneySuperMarket, GoCompare, and Confused.com seem like the obvious place to start. They're quick, simple, and can list multiple providers in one place.

They may also provide a GAP Insurance comparison system.

So, why doesn't Total Loss GAP appear?

The short answer is we choose not to be there. And we think it's for good reason.

Here's what you need to know before you assume the best policy is the one listed on a comparison site.

How Do Comparison Sites Work?

Price comparison sites aren't always 'neutral' lists. Every provider that appears will pay for their spot, either directly or by giving a commission per sale.   Total Loss GAP not on comparison websites

The more providers pay, the more visible their listings become.

That is just marketing, though, so nothing unusual in that.

However, it doesn't necessarily mean you're getting the best deal. It just means you're seeing the policies of those willing (or able) to pay the most to get in front of you.

GAP Insurance is a niche product. And unlike standard motor insurance, the differences between policies can be significant, even if the prices look similar.

Why Total Loss GAP Doesn't Appear on Comparison Sites

Our brands have been selling GAP insurance online for around 15 years, and our founders have been selling the product for over 25 years.

Our focus has always been direct-to-customer, with no middlemen or third-party platforms adding cost or confusion.

Here's why we stay off comparison sites:

  • Lower prices without third-party commission - If we listed on comparison sites, they'd take a cut. Instead, we pass those savings directly to our customers. Whilst we can't always promise to be the cheapest, we do not overinflate our margins just to pay fees to third parties.
  • More tailored policies - Many comparison platforms only show a limited range of GAP policy types. We offer multiple formats in Return to Invoice, Vehicle Replacement and Lease & Contract Hire with flexible terms and cover levels. Comparison websites rarely offer deferred start dates, deposit protection for leases, or '3-in-1' Vehicle Replacement GAP cover, which we first introduced to the UK market in 2015.
  • Specialist advice and support - Our team is a specialist in products such as GAP Insurance. We don't offer 20 types of insurance, with GAP Insurance being an add-on. With hundreds of thousands of customers, with millions paid out in GAP claims, we like to think we understand the product well.

What You Might Miss on a Comparison Site

Not all GAP policies are equal. If you're relying on a comparison platform, here's what you might be missing out on:

  • Higher claim limits (we can provide unlimited claim limits for vehicles up to £75k in purchase price, then £75k maximum for vehicles up to £100k)
  • Cover for dealer and factory-fitted options like sat nav, paint protection, and trim upgrades
  • Transferable cover to a new car
  • Flexible start dates (including deferred start)
  • Support from a GAP Insurance specialist, not a general call centre. Some on comparison websites do not have telephone support at all.

Comparison sites often default to the cheapest type of GAP Insurance, which may not be the correct type of cover for your needs. This can be the case when you've received a good discount on the car, paid a large deposit, bought it with cash, or want complete invoice protection.

Can I Still Compare Policies Without a Comparison Site?

Absolutely. We encourage it.

When you're comparing GAP Insurance, don't just look at price. Ask:

  • What's the claim limit?
  • Does it cover all optional extras?
  • Is there a cancellation option or a cooling-off period?
  • Can I transfer it if I change cars?
  • Is the policy underwritten by a UK insurer and FSCS protected?

All of this information is laid out on our site, or you can ask us directly.

Final Word

We are not against comparison websites in any way. However, we do not feel that they necessarily offer the best value for everyone.

By focusing solely on price, or perhaps how much a provider is willing to pay to get a prominent position, it does not mean that what you are shown is the best option for your circumstances.

Being able to discuss your purchase with a specialist means you could have a better chance of understanding your options.

Just because we're not on GoCompare or MoneySuperMarket doesn't mean we can't offer a great deal, quite the opposite.

We avoid aggregator platforms so we can keep prices competitive, offer more flexible cover, and deal directly with our customers from start to finish.

If you're ready to explore your options and get a quote without the noise of a crowded marketplace, we're here to help.
