Why is buying a gap insurance online such a good choice and what are the advantages?

Dealerships have recently had to enforce Financial Conduct Authority guidelines which mean that now they have to provide details about gap insurance and the levels of cover that they offer and also give a minimum of a 4 day window in which consumers are encouraged to compare and shop around.

This means that for the first time policy holders should now be actively forced to compare gap insurance prices. This is genuinely good news as this we hope will enable all prospective customers to be able to take time out and review policy performance, terms and conditions as well as prices.

So what is the difference between online gap insurance and the levels of cover that dealerships can offer?

While we could only ever comment on policies that we provide in our experience there is absolutely no dilution of cover. In fact if anything the levels of cover that the majority of dealerships can provide in fact inferior. This is because unlike a total loss gap insurance policy purchased online you are in fact limited to a certain level of cover, protected via a certain policy and the way in which you settlement is calculated. In most cases you are also given a claim limit which can in hindsight prove restrictive.

Instead when comparing gap insurance prices online and dealership policies we would advocate that you instead temporarily ignore that price. After all price differences are nothing more that a combined effect of lower rates of Insurance premium tax. Yes money is money and it always has been and always will be a consideration but it should be secondary to policy features and performance.

Instead a good starting point.would be comparing

How claims are handled?

What is used when you claim is calculated?

Are there any exclusions?

Are any parts of the vehicle purchase not covered?

Is there an Excess?

Only once you have satisfied yourself that you are happy with the essential terms and conditions should you start to compare prices.
