Motor Excess Insurance for Driving Instructors and Driving Schools

Protect your tuition car and your business. Cover for you, pupils 17 years old or older and with a valid UK license (full or provisional).

A single claim on your driving school car can cost you hundreds in excess. Whether you're a self-employed ADI or run a small school with several instructors, this policy helps keep your business moving when the unexpected happens.

Why it matters    Driving tuition Motor Excess Insurance

Most driving instructors carry high excess levels to keep premiums down. That's fine until a pupil stalls at a junction and gets rear-ended or misjudges a parallel park and scuffs a panel.

If your main motor insurer pays the claim and charges you your excess, Motor Excess Insurance can refund your excess payment in full, saving you time, money and stress.

Who it's for

  • Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs)
  • PDI trainees and franchised instructors
  • Independent or multi-car schools
  • Anyone using a vehicle for tuition and named on a valid motor insurance policy
  • Vehicles declared as a Taxi, Commercial Vehicle, or Business Car when bought (this includes Driving School Vehicles)

Provisional licence holders (i.e. your pupils) are fine as long as the instructor is the named policyholder

Dual-control cars, branded vehicles and hire/reward use are eligible

What's covered

  • A full refund of your motor insurance excess (voluntary + compulsory) - subject to policy terms and claim limits.
  • Applies to accident, fire, theft, and vandalism claims
  • Fault and non-fault incidents (if your insurer can't recover the excess within 6 months, we'll pay it)
  • Unlimited claims up to your annual claim limit (e.g. £500, £1,000 etc.)

What's not covered

  • Claims during the first 14 days (unless you're renewing a policy with Total Loss GAP, or bought this within 14 days of your main motor insurance policy)
  • Windscreen-only claims, misfuelling, and breakdown.
  • Any claim not accepted by your motor insurer.
  • Any claim not submitted within 31 days of your insurer settling.

How it works

  1. You make a successful claim with your motor insurer.
  2. You pay your excess.
  3. Submit your receipt, settlement letter, and policy schedule to Davies Group within 31 days of your motor insurance settlement.
  4. You get a refund for an eligible claim simply.

FAQs for Driving School Motor Excess Insurance

  1. Does the Motor Excess Insurance cover learner drivers?
Yes. As long as the learner driver is covered on your main motor insurance policy and holds a valid UK provisional licence, they can be covered under the Motor Excess Insurance policy.

  2. Can I obtain Motor Excess Insurance for dual-control vehicles used for tuition purposes?
Yes. The policy can cover dual-control vehicles used for driving instruction, provided this use is declared at the time of purchasing the policy.

  3. Does the policy cover driving instructors with multiple vehicles?
No, each Motor Excess Insurance policy is specific to one insured vehicle. If you operate multiple cars, a separate policy must be purchased for each one.

  4. Can I transfer my Motor Excess Insurance if I replace my car with a new one?
Yes. If you replace your dual-control vehicle during the policy term, you can transfer the policy to the new car free of charge, as long as it meets the eligibility criteria.

  5. Are my named instructors also covered?
Yes, we can cover all named drivers on the main motor insurance policy, provided they are 17 or older and hold a valid UK driving licence.   Driving School motor excess insurance quotation

  6. Can I claim more than once if I have multiple pupils involved in separate accidents?
Yes. You can make multiple claims as long as the combined total does not exceed the annual policy limit defined in your cover.

  7. Is there a waiting period on the policy?
Yes, there is a 14-day waiting period for new policies. However, this is waived if the policy is a renewal of a previous motor excess policy from Total Loss GAP, or bought within 14 days of your main motor policy or another product from an Aequitas Automotive brand.

  8. Does the policy cover commercial use for driving instruction?
Yes. Commercial use for driving tuition is covered as long as it is declared and accepted at the time of purchase. If you are teaching a learner in your own personal car, like a Mum or Dad teaching their child, then this is not Commercial use as you are not charging. Standard Motor Excess Insurance for younger drivers would be fine if this is the case.
