Does Gap insurance cover you if your car is stolen with the use of the keys?

We are often asked this question as it worries many UK car owners. After all, you may be the most careful driver possible, but no one can account for what some unsavoury societal elements can do.

Unfortunately, there is no quick answer. This is because for your ( Guaranteed Asset Protection ) gap insurance to cover you are a victim of theft,  your standard car insurance company must look at the claim and decide they are happy to offer you a settlement. ( please remember that in most cases, it is a standard term of your standard car insurance policy that it will be invalid if you are deemed to have done something illegal, fraudulent or negligent. As we are not trained or regulated to talk about car insurance, we would always ask you to refer back to your car insurance provider)

It may sound easy, but we will try to explain.

Let's say you buy a form of gap cover, and sometime later, your car is stolen using the keys.

This may sound like an open-and-shut case, but it is not. Surely your gap insurance policy will "just " spring into action and payout?

If someone breaks into your home and, without your consent, takes your car keys and steals your car, then, yes, your insurance company would deem that you have taken due care and attention. After their qualifying period, if the vehicle has not been found, they will decide that the car was stolen and not recovered and write it off.

Let's say you accidentally leave your keys in the car and then go shopping. When you come back two hours later, your vehicle is gone. Okay, this may sound far-fetched; however, with more and more cars now adopting keyless entry systems, this exact scenario is a lot more common than you may imagine.

The car was still stolen with the keys; however, in the second example, your fully comprehensive insurance company would deem that you had acted negligently, and therefore, even though your car may never be recovered, they would be under no legal obligation to offer you any form of settlement.

You may be alarmed to know that the theft of cars and car owners' belongings is on a worrying trajectory. Vehicle thefts have all but doubled in less than five years. According to a report from the Claims Journal, 43642 thefts occurred in 2013, while in 2018, this number rose to 81,911.

So, how does gap insurance cover you if your car is stolen?

For our policies, the critical aspect is that your motor insurer agrees that they are happy to settle, taking the circumstances into account, which leads your car to be declared a total loss. Also alarming is that sometimes a stolen car is simply taken for the parts it can provide. Some car parts are worth many thousands of pounds alone, so it can be easier and more lucrative for thieves to strip the stolen car down to its parts rather than try to move it on as a working vehicle.

So, what practical steps can you take to ensure your car is not stolen using the keys?

  • When you are out and about, keep your keys on you, not in a satchel, shopping bag or handbag.
  • When you are at home, keep your keys in a secure place.
  • This means keeping them away from doors and windows where they may be visible from the outside.
  • If you can store keys in a metal box or a specialist key container, this will block the signals prospective thieves need to be able to clone your key.
  • Don't forget physical barriers, so if you have a garage, use it. Equally, a good old-fashioned steering lock can make some criminals think twice.

Thatcham is an organisation that specialises in research and automotive risk assessment. It tests thousands of cars from hundreds of manufacturers for safety, security, and sustainability.

They tested many popular cars with keyless entry systems and found the following passed their security tests and were classed as having superior security systems in relation to keyless entry.

BMW 1 Series / 7 Series / 8 Series, BMW X6 / X7, Ford Puma, Jaguar XE

Land Rover Evoque, Mercedes B-Class, Porsche 911, Porsche Macan

and the Volkswagen Passat.

By contrast, the following cars failed their tests and were rated as having poor security.

DS3 Crossback, Ford Mondeo, Kia ProCeed, Lexus UX, Hyundai Nexo

Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, Toyota RAV-4, and the Volvo V60

Please also remember that it is not just cars that are stolen with keys; the number of vans stolen is also on the increase.

We are a gap insurance provider, so as you may have already guessed, we hope you will consider purchasing gap insurance policy. Equally, as a responsible gap insurance provider, we sincerely hope that if you buy gap insurance to cover that, you will never need to use it. Please remember that if you do become a victim of theft, that is what your gap insurance is there to help with.

No Gap Insurance policy can prevent your car from being stolen. However, your gap insurance policy can ensure that any financial concerns are taken care of.
