Does GAP Insurance Cover Track Days or Off-Road Use?
No. GAP Insurance will not cover a claim if your vehicle is written off during a track day, racing event, timed competition or off-road driving activity.
These situations fall outside normal road use and are excluded by almost all
GAP Insurance policies because the risk of severe damage is far higher than everyday driving on public roads.
Track day exclusions usually apply whether the event is competitive or non-competitive.
Off-road use can also include:
- Driving on private off-road tracks
- Rally-style events
- Mud plugging or 4x4 obstacle courses
- Driving on beaches, fields or unmade surfaces
If your vehicle is declared a total loss in one of these activities, your motor insurer may also refuse the claim. If the main motor insurance claim is declined, GAP Insurance would not pay out either.
Why Are Track Days Excluded?
GAP Insurance is designed to work alongside standard road insurance policies covering normal day-to-day driving.
Track driving carries a much higher risk of:
- High-speed crashes
- Rollovers
- Fire damage
- Severe impact damage
- Multi-vehicle accidents
Because of this, insurers treat track use very differently from normal road driving.
What If I Have Specialist Track Day Insurance?
Some specialist motor insurers offer separate track day insurance policies for occasional circuit use.
However, even if you arrange separate track cover, this does not automatically extend your GAP Insurance policy. You would need to check the wording carefully, as most GAP providers still exclude any claim arising from track or off-road use.
Does This Include Driving on the Nürburgring?
Potentially, yes.
Some insurers classify the Nürburgring as a public toll road during tourist sessions, while others treat it as a racing circuit or track environment. This can affect both your motor insurance and any GAP Insurance cover.
Always check before driving abroad on any circuit-style road or organised driving event.

- Motorway and urban driving
- Theft or accident write-offs

The Bottom Line
If your vehicle is written off during a track day or off-road activity, GAP Insurance is very unlikely to pay out.
Before attending any driving event, always check both your motor insurance and GAP Insurance exclusions carefully so you understand exactly what is and is not covered.
