Like all insurances, you may not be too surprised to learn that GAP Insurance may not always settle. All products have terms and conditions to meet, in order for a claim to be eligible and paid.
Here we provide the Top 10 reasons why your GAP Insurance policy will not pay out.
The number one reason why a GAP Insurance policy does not pay out. For a GAP policy to work your main motor insurer must cover the incident you are claiming for, and pay out the market value for the vehicle. The GAP Insurance can then top up this settlement.
If the motor insurer does not pay out then you cannot claim on the GAP.
Examples of when your motor insurer may not pay out would include where you have been negligent in leaving the keys for vehicle unguarded. Other examples would include drink driving or using the vehicle for excluded uses like courier or taxi use.
Another example would be where the vehicle suffers a catastrophic mechanical failure, like an engine or gearbox blow up. Your motor insurance is unlikely to cover this (unless it happened because of a flood perhaps), even if the vehicle is not economic to repair.
This means that you have taken the GAP policy out in your name but you have no potential of a financial loss if the vehicle is written off.
An example of this would be where you take a GAP policy in your name, but the vehicle ownership and finance agreement is in someone else's name. If the vehicle is written off then you cannot claim for a loss as the vehicle is not in your name.
You must have an insurable risk in the vehicle to be valid to take a GAP Insurance policy for it.
Most GAP Insurance products do not cover some commercial activities with standard cover. This may even be the case when your motor insurer does cover you.
One area of commercial use often excluded from standard cover is 'hire and reward'. This can include taxis, private hire, courier, and chauffeur work.
Other areas of commercial work often not covered would be tuition or driving school vehicles.

You may have elected to pay for the GAP cover on a monthly basis, or through a credit agreement. If you stop paying this then your cover could end automatically.
If you sell your vehicle then the GAP cover normally ceases automatically. This can also be the case if you change the ownership of the vehicle on the V5 document between family members. For example, if a father buys the vehicle and then transfers the vehicle to one of his children, the original purchase invoice for the vehicle is still in the father's name. The fact that the vehicle has changed keepers to his son or daughter could then prevent him from making a GAP claim.
GAP Insurance is very much a 'one-time-only' type of cover. You can only claim on it once when the vehicle is written off. If you successfully claim for the vehicle then that is the end of the policy. This is even the case if you have some time left on the cover.
If you replace the vehicle you have claimed for then you will need a new GAP policy for this vehicle.
Remember GAP cover is designed to top up your motor insurers settlement back to perhaps the price you paid for the vehicle, or to clear a finance or lease settlement. If there is no 'gap' between the motor insurers settlement and the original price you paid (if that is the GAP you have purchased), then you cover has no difference to make up.
Another example where there may be no GAP is if your motor insurer replaces the vehicle for you. Perhaps your vehicle was brand new, and your insurer has provided another brand new replacement for you.
This may not happen often, but if it does then you have no loss to cover. Normally, you will see your GAP cover simply transferred to your new vehicle free of charge.
All GAP products have a period of cover. When the policy comes to an end you cannot normally renew or get new cover as you have owned the vehicle too long at this point.
The decision of how long you want GAP cover for on your vehicle is one you must make at the outset.
Most GAP policies will require that you are fully comprehensively insured for the full policy term. If you are only third party covered then your motor insurer would not pay out for a fault claim, or a theft. If your main motor insurer does not payout then you cannot claim on the GAP cover.
You may have heard of Glass Guide. It is widely used by insurers and motor dealers to work out the value of a vehicle. If your vehicle is not listed in Glasses Guide then many GAP products will not cover you.
This is simply because GAP is designed to cover from the 'write off' value of the vehicle. If there are not guide prices to work out the write off value then the GAP Insurance underwriters cannot work out what they should be covering.
Imported vehicles and modified vehicles (vans turned into motorhomes aftermarket) are usually excluded from cover, therefore.
This is not an exhaustive list, and there will be other reasons why your GAP cover will not settle if you make a claim. You will be asked to give your details including your bank account and sort code. Premium Credit the company that provide the funding will then either write or email to confirm that you are aware of the agreement and then normally 10-14 days later your first deposit instalment will be taken. Your regular monthly payment will then be on the same day of the month that you purchased your policy.
If you pay monthly you will need to pay a small deposit payment. Your first instalment will normally be 10-14 days later and then this will be followed by a further 11 equal instalments. This means that there will be a total of 12 monthly instalments however your cover will continue until the end of your policy.
Some gap insurance policies have a claim limit. A claim limit is the maximum amount that your gap insurance will pay on top of whatever your insurance company offer you in settlement. For vehicles up to £75,000, we do not have one. Your policy will simply pay whatever it needs to. For vehicles over between £75,000 and £100,000 there is a maximum claim limit fo £75,000.
The maximum length of coverage for Gap Insurance is 5 years. For other policies, it is 4 years. Excess insurance is an annual renewable policy.

As a perk of purchasing a comprehensive motor insurance policy, some providers will offer a 'new for old' term. If you have purchased a brand new vehicle, within the first 12 months of ownership, if the vehicle was declared a total loss, subject to terms and conditions, your own motor insurer would simply replace the vehicle. Therefore, you may not need/want the Gap Insurance in place during the first year and instead may want to delay the start date until the cars first birthday.

Contract Hire gap insurance will pay the difference between your insurance company settlement on the day your vehicle is written off and the amount needed to settle your lease or contract hire agreement. It will not cover any late payment charges or arrears.

The policy will not cover any vehicle used at anytime in a public service capacity,such as Military,Police or Ambulance vehicles. Vehicles used for hire and reward,courier and delivery services,and short-term self drive hire.Also,vehicles used for the carriage of passengers,including but not limited to private hire and taxi services.Vehicles used for driving instruction in connection with your occupation are also not covered. Your alloy wheel policy will pay for a cosmetic repair to your alloy wheel. If the wheel is no longer viable (e.g. cracked ), then your wheel would be scrapped, and as a token of goodwill, your policy would pay £150. We know that this will not buy you a new wheel. Replacing tyres can be extremely expensive. Tyre insurance will pay for the cost of repair or replacement of your tyres which has resulted from damage that has occurred within the geographical limit.
You can make as many claims as you have chosen when you bought your policy within 12 months. You can check how many claims you chose, as this will be shown at the top of your document.

Return to invoice gap insurance means that if your vehicle is written off, your policy will top up your motor insurance company's settlement to either the amount outstanding on finance or the original invoice price you paid, whichever is the higher. From this, you can clear any finance if necessary, and the balance of funds (the difference between the invoice price you paid and the amount outstanding on finance -if applicable) is then yours to spend as you see fit. At present (Jan 2024) the current rate of IPT (Insurance Premium Tax) charged on independently purchased gap insurance / supplementary insurance is 12%.
Yes, providing that you have set the start date to the date you wish the policy to start, your cover will start immediately. (Please remember that if you have a deferred policy, this will not start until the date you have chosen, and we can not cover accidents or thefts that have already happened.)

Total Loss Gap is pleased to confirm that we have been recognised as the 'Best Buy' for GAP Insurance in the UK by motoring giant Auto Express.
Auto Express undertook an independent survey of various Gap Insurance providers in the UK. They took a standard quote from a franchised primary dealer for a £32,270 vehicle and obtained a quote for three year Gap cover for £449. This quote was then compared against many online providers for alternative quotations.
Auto Express highlighted the ease at which a quote can be obtained from the Total Loss Gap website.
It confirmed the premium found at Total Loss Gap was 59% cheaper than the motor dealer at £185.28
Total Loss Gap was the ONLY provider to be given a full 5 out of 5-star rating.
Total Loss Gap was also awarded the 'Best Buy' for Gap Insurance in the UK for 2021.
Auto Express also commented that Total Loss was the only provider they found to allow deferred start dates. This would allow a later start date if the motor insurers' replacement cover covered the car in year one.
