Do I Get a Refund if I Cancel GAP Insurance?

Yes, you can usually get a refund if you cancel GAP Insurance. Most providers (including Total Loss GAP) offer a full refund within 30 days (your 'cooling off' period) if no claim has been made. After that, you’ll normally receive a pro-rata refund, though an admin fee may be deducted.

Full refunds

  • Most GAP Insurance policies give you a 30-day cooling-off period.
  • If you cancel within this time and have not claimed, you’ll usually receive a 100% refund.

Pro-rata refunds

  • If you cancel after 30 days, refunds are normally calculated on a pro-rata basis.
  • An admin fee (often £35) may be deducted depending on what terms were in place when you bought the policy. Total Loss GAP confirms any fees in your policy documents or your Policy Schedule.
  • For example, cancelling halfway through a 4-year policy could return roughly half the premium, minus fees.

When refunds may not apply

  • If you’ve already made a claim, the policy will end without refund. You cannot cancel a policy that has already expired or been claimed on.
  • If your car has been written off or stolen, the GAP policy is considered to have been used.

How to cancel

  • Contact your GAP provider directly by phone, email, or contact form.
  • Provide your policy number and car details.
  • Refunds are usually processed back to your original payment method, or sometimes by cheque or bank transfer.

Tip: If you’re selling your car, ask about transferring GAP Insurance to your new vehicle instead of cancelling outright.
