Ford Partners with Renault to Build Affordable EVs
Ford and Renault have announced a major new partnership that could bring back one of the most iconic car names in history.
Together, they plan to build two Ford-branded electric cars for Europe using Renault’s Ampere platform.
So far, the names, styling, and specifications are still secret, but the deal has created a lot of excitement, especially among UK drivers and media who think this could see the return of the Ford Fiesta name in dealer showrooms.
What Ford and Renault have confirmed
Renault will supply the EV platform and build the cars at its ElectriCity sites in northern France. Ford will design the cars and make sure they drive and look like authentic Fords. There is no intention that they appear to be a re-badged Renault.
The first model is expected in early 2028, with a second to follow.
Ford says the partnership will help bring “affordable electric vehicles” to Europe, which matters as EV prices have risen in recent years. In addition, the challenge of competing with Chinese manufacturers has intensified.
By working together, the two companies hope to lower costs. They also plan to work on electric vans, but details are still limited.
Why This Matters for UK Drivers
UK drivers remember how popular the Fiesta was; it was a motoring icon. The Fiesta production run extended from 1977 to 2023, with over 22 million units built.
When it was discontinued in July 2023, it left a gap in a market where small cars are still in demand, even with more SUVs on the road. Ford hasn’t offered a real replacement, and its current electric cars are more expensive.
This partnership gives Ford a chance to return to the affordable, compact car market that British buyers have always liked. With Renault handling production at its EV plants, Ford can focus on designing cars that fit European roads and budgets.
Could This Be the Return of the Fiesta?
Ford hasn’t said if it will bring back the Fiesta name, or if the new cars will be hatchbacks, crossovers, or something else.
Still, the motoring press is excited about the idea of a Fiesta-style EV because the key factors are in place:
- - A plan for affordable European EVs
- - A platform that already supports small electric cars
- - A significant gap in Ford’s UK lineup
- - A name that still carries considerable weight
It’s still just speculation, not confirmation, but the excitement makes sense.
What We Actually Know
The confirmed facts are simple:
- Two Ford electric passenger cars will be built on Renault’s Ampere platform.
- Production will take place in France.
- Ford controls the design and driving feel.
- First model arrives in early 2028
- LCV collaboration is on the table, but not yet detailed
Everything else, including names, styling, prices, and segments, is still under wraps.
The Bottom Line
This partnership shows that Ford is rethinking how it approaches the European EV market. By working with Renault, Ford can offer electric cars that are more affordable and better suited to everyday buyers. It’s not clear yet if a Fiesta-inspired model is coming, but even without that, this is a big step.
If Ford shares more details, especially about size, price, or names, UK drivers will be paying close attention.
