How Long Does It Take to Settle a GAP Insurance Claim?

Most GAP Insurance claims are settled within days after your motor insurer has confirmed and paid their settlement. The main factors that affect the timescale are how quickly you provide the required documents, how complex the claim is, and whether your finance company needs to be paid directly.

Typical timescales

  • Once your motor insurer pays, GAP claims usually settle within a few days, typically 10-14 working days.
  • Some straightforward claims may settle faster if all documents are complete.
  • If your finance provider is involved, settlement may take longer.

Factors that can delay claims

  • Delays in your motor insurer providing their final settlement letter.
  • Missing documents, such as your purchase invoice or finance agreement settlement.
  • Complex cases where negative equity or unusual finance terms need clarification.
  • If your GAP Insurance provider needs to settle with a finance company directly, it may add processing time.

How to speed up your claim

  • Provide all requested documents as soon as your claim starts (see documents guide).
  • Keep in regular contact with both your motor insurer and GAP provider.
  • Make sure your motor insurer has settled and confirmed the total loss before contacting GAP.

Tip: Whilst delays caused by your motor insurer cannot be avoided, getting all your documents ready for the GAP Insurance claims team can save time later. Also key, do not accept your motor insurers settlement before you lodge your GAP Insurance claim.
