Does GAP Insurance Cover Third Party Motor Insurance?

No. GAP Insurance does not cover vehicles insured only on a third-party or third-party, fire & theft basis. To qualify for GAP, your car must be insured under a fully comprehensive motor insurance policy. This is because GAP relies on your motor insurer first declaring a total loss and paying out the car’s market value. Third-party policies do not provide this level of cover.

Why comprehensive cover is required

  • GAP Insurance only activates once your motor insurer pays out the market value for a total loss.
  • Third-party policies do not provide a market value payout for damage to your own car.
  • Without a payout to base the calculation on, GAP Insurance cannot apply.

What happens with third party policies

  • If your car is damaged in a fault accident, you will receive no payout for your own vehicle from your motor insurer.
  • If damaged in a non-fault accident, recovery depends on the third party’s insurer, but GAP Insurance will not apply unless a full market value settlement is secured. .
  • Fire & theft extensions may pay out in limited cases, but they still do not meet most GAP Insurance eligibility requirements.

Your options if not eligible

  • Upgrade to a fully comprehensive motor policy if you want GAP Insurance protection.
  • Relying on third-party cover alone will not allow you to take out or claim on GAP Insurance in most cases.
  • Discuss options with your motor insurer if unsure about upgrading cover.

Tip: Always check GAP eligibility before buying. If your motor policy isn’t fully comprehensive, GAP won’t apply in most cases.
