Does GAP Insurance Cover Modified Cars?

Most GAP Insurance policies only cover factory-fit extras or dealer-installed options declared at the time of purchase. Aftermarket modifications, such as engine tuning, suspension changes, body kits, vinyl wraps, or custom alloy wheels, are usually excluded from GAP cover.

What is usually covered?

  • Factory-fitted extras: Items fitted during manufacturing, such as upgraded audio, navigation, or trim packs.
  • Dealer-installed options: Accessories fitted and invoiced by the dealer at the time of purchase (e.g. tow bars, parking sensors).
  • These are usually included in your invoice price and therefore protected under GAP.

What is not covered?

  • Performance modifications: Engine remaps, turbo upgrades, exhaust changes.
  • Cosmetic changes: Body kits, vinyl wraps, resprays, tinted windows.
  • Aftermarket wheels: Custom alloy wheels fitted after purchase are generally excluded.

Why are modifications excluded?

  • Valuation issues: Modifications don’t always increase resale value or may not be recognised in trade guides.
  • Repair complexity: Modified vehicles may be harder or costlier to repair after a write-off.
  • Risk profile: Modifications can increase accident or theft risk, making them unsuitable for GAP policies.

At Total Loss GAP, we can cover ALL factory-fitted options and up to £1,500 of dealer-fitted accessories detailed on your sales invoice. This included paint and fabric protection treatments, but not wraps. We cannot cover any aftermarket modifications or where the car has been altered outside of the manufacturer's specifications. If in doubt, please check with us.
