Can Young Drivers Get GAP Insurance?

Eligibility rules

  • The driver must be at least 18 years old.
  • The driver must hold a full UK driving licence.
  • The vehicle must meet policy requirements (e.g. under 8 years old and less than 80,000 miles).

Restrictions for young drivers

  • Provisional licence holders: Not usually eligible for GAP Insurance.
  • Named drivers: All drivers must be named as either the main insured or as a named driver on the main motor insurance. The GAP Insurance must be in the name of the vehicle's registered keeper and named on any finance for the vehicle.
  • High-risk vehicles: Some insurers may decline cover for young drivers insuring high-performance cars, or charge a higher, risk-based, premium.

What matters most

  • Eligibility is based more on the car’s age, mileage, and purchase type than the driver’s age.
  • The driver must be the policyholder for both GAP and motor insurance.
  • The most suitable GAP Cover type depends on how the car was bought.

Total Loss GAP can cover all drivers over the age of 18 who have a full driving license in the UK. Other eligibility criteria must also be met. The GAP policy must be registered with the owner of the vehicle (named on the V5-C), who has any finance in their name and is also named (either as the main insured or as a named driver) on the fully comprehensive motor insurance for the vehicle.
