Can I Get GAP Insurance for Vans or Commercial Vehicles?

Yes, many GAP Insurance providers offer cover for vans and light commercial vehicles, but there are restrictions. Eligibility often depends on the vehicle’s weight, how it is used, and whether it falls within age and mileage limits.

What types of vans are eligible

  • Light commercial vehicles: Many providers accept vans up to 3,500kg GVW (gross vehicle weight).
  • Private use vans: Vans used for personal or mixed personal/business purposes are often eligible.
  • Car-derived vans: Smaller vans based on passenger car platforms are typically included. However, converted vans (after being first sold as a car) are often excluded as a modified vehicle.

Restrictions on cover

  • Weight limits: Vans over 3,500kg GVW are usually excluded.
  • Age and mileage: Most policies cover vehicles up to 8 years old and 80,000 miles at the start date.
  • Purchase type: GAP usually applies to vans bought outright, on HP, on finance or on a lease.

Business use and exclusions

  • Courier or delivery vans: Vehicles used purely for courier work, hire & reward, or daily deliveries are often excluded.
  • Heavily modified vans: Camper conversions or specialist body types may not qualify.
  • Fleet vehicles: Some providers restrict cover to privately owned or small business use, not large fleets.

Total Loss GAP can provide GAP cover for commercial vehicles not used for 'hire & reward' type work, such as courier or delivery services. The vehicle must be classified as a Light Commercial Vehicle and under 3500kg Gross Vehicle Weight.
