Can I Claim on GAP Insurance More Than Once?

No, you cannot claim on GAP Insurance more than once. GAP is designed to protect you for a single total loss event. Once a claim is paid, the policy ends and cannot be reused. If you replace your car after a write-off or theft, you would need to arrange a new GAP Insurance policy.

Replacing your car after a total loss?

Why GAP only pays once

  • GAP is triggered by a total lossonce your car is written off or stolen, the cover ends with that event.
  • Policies are priced on the assumption of one possible claim during their term.
  • Multiple claims would make the cover unsustainable, so terms limit it to one claim only.

What happens after a payout

  • Your GAP provider pays the settlement to you or your finance company (depending on the policy).
  • The policy ends immediately after the payout.
  • You cannot transfer the balance of cover or reuse the policy for another loss.
  • You cannot claim a refund for the time left because you have had full benefit of the policy.

Getting new GAP Insurance cover

  • If you buy a replacement car, you can usually arrange a new GAP policy.
  • Your new policy can be taken to suit the purchase price of the new vehicle, purchase method and length of time you wish to be covered for.
  • The fact you have just claimed on a GAP Insurance policy should not have a bearing as to your eligibility for new cover.

Exceptions - whilst the GAP Insurance element can only be claimed on once, some additional benefits may allow multiple claims for some elements within the policy terms. For example, some GAP Insurance products allow for multiple motor excess claims during the policy term. This means that whilst only one GAP Insurance claim can be made, you can claim for a motor insurance excess payment if you make a non-write off claim with your motor insurer. Check your policy for details.

Tip: Think of GAP as a one-time safety net. If you need cover for your next car, arrange a new policy as soon as you purchase it.
