Are Imported Cars Eligible for GAP Insurance?

Some imported cars can qualify for GAP Insurance, but many providers have restrictions or exclude them entirely. Obtaining a standard valuation and motor insurance for an imported vehicle can be challenging, which is one of the main reasons they may be excluded from GAP Insurance cover

Types of imports

  • Parallel imports: Cars bought abroad but manufactured to EU/UK specifications. May be eligible for GAP Insurance, with some providers, but with restrictions.
  • Grey imports: Vehicles built for non-EU/UK markets (e.g. Japan, USA). They are often excluded due to parts availability and valuation issues.

Eligibility issues

  • Specification differences: Cars not built to EU/UK standards may lack insurer data for valuations.
  • Parts and repair: Non-standard imports may be more difficult and costly to repair.
  • Resale values: Grey imports often have lower resale values, complicating cover.

What to check before buying

  • Always read the vehicle eligibility criteria in the policy wording.
  • Confirm whether your import is classed as parallel or grey.
  • Ask the GAP provider before purchase if your car will be accepted.

Please note that the current Total Loss GAP products for GAP Insurance do exclude cover for imported vehicles. The vehicle must be first registered in the UK, be supplied by a UK main dealer and feature in Glass's Guide.

Tip: If your import isn’t eligible for GAP, check if your comprehensive insurance offers enhanced replacement or agreed value options.
