Does GAP Insurance Cover Fire or Flood Damage?

Yes, GAP Insurance covers your car if it is written off due to fire, flood, or other insured damage. GAP only pays out once your motor insurer declares the car a total loss and issues their 'market value' settlement.

When GAP applies

  • If fire or flood damage leads your motor insurer to declare a total loss.
  • Once the motor insurer pays the market value, GAP covers the difference to invoice, replacement, or finance balance (depending on policy type).
  • Without a total loss declaration, GAP cannot be claimed.

Examples of covered damage

  • Fire damage: Engine fire, electrical fire, or arson leading to write-off.
  • Flood damage: Severe water ingress or immersion making the car uneconomical to repair.
  • Other insured perils: Storm damage, falling trees, or similar insured events that cause a total loss.

What is not covered

  • Minor fire or flood damage that your insurer repairs.
  • Mechanical or electrical breakdowns (not classed as insured perils).
  • Damage caused while using the car illegally or outside policy terms.

Tip: GAP Insurance only starts once your motor insurer pays their settlement. Always claim with them first for fire or flood damage.
